Drs. Accounts

Account Book of Dr. William Howell GIFFORD 1851-1972

*Dr. William Howell GIFFORD was born in Washington, Mason County, Kentucky, 23 April 1814, and died in Brazil, Indiana, 29 March 1891. In 1831 he came with his parents to Putnam County, Indiana. After graduation from Transylvania Medical College in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1838, he began medical practice in Williamstown, Posey Township, Clay County, Indiana. Apparently he kept a series of account books, of which this one covering the years 1851 through 1869 is preserved in the Manuscripts Section, Indiana Division, Indiana State Library. Dr. GIFFORD noted the names of the heads of household which he visited; he did not identify any other patients by name. He did not record births as we know it, but using the entry “assisting lady in parturition.” Such entries are noted with the abbreviation “alp.”
