Bowling Green Sign

Bowling Green Sign

In 1933, H. L. Elkin sponsored the building of the first sign with the help of Clay County residents, cash donations and free labor. It pictured David Thomas, the original settler, talking to the Potawatomi Indian Chief with whom he traded for his homestead. This sign is a memorial to the hardy Native Americans and those brave, hard-working pioneers who first settled this area. On August 25, 2007, the third sign to be erected was re-dedicated. The Bowling Green Old Settlers Committee is responsible for erecting and maintaining the new sign. This memorial, like the first one, is being paid for with donations, which are still being accepted. Ron and Sandy Glasscock were the artists of the new sign. Duke Energy donated the lights for the sign.
